Small Works make Big Things Happen

Islip Museum of Art Exhibit: "Pocket Sized"June 28 – September 13, 2015 Curated by Rhonda Cooper
"In today’s art world, where the notion that bigger is better seems to be too-often taken for granted, it’s refreshing to see that contemporary artists are continuing to produce work on a small scale as well. While small-scale paintings and sculptures, or maquettes, have often been produced as preliminary studies for larger-scale works, the artists represented in the IAM’s current exhibition demonstrate that small works hold a valid and unique place of their own in an art world often dominated by more sizable creations."
I submitted to this show via email at the last minute. Having two pieces selected for the show I decided to venture out and go to reception not knowing what to expect. This museum is tucked away in East Islip, New York and while one may drive by since it is hidden by trees, it is quite a small gem.

There are two main galleries and a main hall filled with small "Pocket Sized" artwork. The sunlight flowed into the rooms and accented all archways creating a delightful setting to view art.

The first summer Juried Exhibit features over 30 diverse works from artists living in and influenced by the rich artistic culture in the lower Hudson Valley.

"Symphony" oil 30" x 30" was created at Vytlacil on a rainy day while completing a one month residency and then finished up in studio. I had been working on a series of small paintings and then decided to take the largest canvas I had and go outdoors.
When approaching a painting, size matters. Sometimes I feel more intimate and hope to produce a small treasure, other times I feel like shouting, singing and dancing so I need a big canvas!
Thanks for taking the time to read about Art!
